You have up until the day before you depart for your trip to purchase travel insurance. However, your policy becomes effective the day after you purchase, so the sooner you purchase, the lengthier your coverage window will be, should you encounter covered scenarios that would impact a potential trip cancellation or postponement of your trip start.
Yes, you can all be on the same policy. Up to 10 travelers (comprising the primary traveler plus nine additional travelers) less than 80 years of age with the same travel dates and same state of residence, can receive coverage under the same policy. Travelers with different dates and/or states of residence will need to purchase separate policies.

Detour Insurance does not offer annual travel plans. You may select a Detour plan for trips up to 180 days in length.
Your Scheduled Departure Date cannot be more than eighteen (18) months from your Effective Date.

You can enter all destinations, if that gives you greater peace of mind, but it is not required. You may simply enter your first or primary destination country. Please note: Detour Insurance coverage excludes the following destinations: Afghanistan, Belarus, Crimea, Iran, Myanmar/Burma, North Korea, Palestinian Territories, Russia, Ukraine, Syria, and Venezuela. You will not be able to select any of these restricted destinations from the destination dropdown menu during the policy quote/purchase process. These restricted destinations impacted by war or sanctions are excluded from any and all coverage, and claims will not be paid for any events that may occur relating to travel to, from or within these destinations. Yes, if you are a U.S resident traveling more than 100 miles from home, we’ve got you covered – and that includes on cruises. For policy purchases, you need only put your first or primary stop. There’s no need to list every destination, although you are welcome to do so.
Detour Insurance offers coverage plans for U.S. residents up to their 80th birthday traveling anywhere in the world more than 100 miles from their home, excluding the following destinations: Afghanistan, Belarus, Crimea, Iran, Myanmar/Burma, North Korea, Palestinian Territories, Russia, Ukraine, Syria, and Venezuela. This list is current as of 2/7/25 and is subject to change.
Yes, like other illnesses, COVID-19 is covered under Detour Insurance plans. If you get COVID before your trip and can’t go: Trip Cancellation can reimburse your prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if you (or your travel companion/family member) are sick and a doctor advises you not to travel. It also covers you if you’re officially quarantined within 10 days of departure. If you get COVID during your trip: Trip Interruption can cover unused trip portions and extra costs to get home if you’re too sick to continue. Medical bills while traveling: If you contract COVID on the trip, Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expense can pay for necessary treatment (doctor, hospital, tests, medicine) up to the selected plan’s limit.

The Effective Date of Your Policy means 12:01 A.M. local time, at Your location, on the day after the required premium for such coverage is received by the Detour in Eastern time.
No stress. Please first take a quick peek of your Spam folder – Hotmail e-dresses in particular seem to be finicky. If you can’t find it, please send Detour Insurance an email at membercare@detourinsurance.com. Please include your name and any companion travelers’ names along with your travel dates. If you do have a Hotmail e-dress, and can possibly provide a non-Hotmail e-dress, that would be helpful as well.

Policy Changes
No, if you have already left your home and are traveling, you may not purchase a policy for your current trip. You can, however, purchase up until the day before you leave for your trip.
No, if you have already started your trip, you are not able to extend coverage, unless it is for a Covered reason.
Detour Insurance has a “free look” period for residents of most States, which varies by State. If your State allows for a free look period, you will find that expiration date in your policy confirmation email: “If you change your mind for any reason by XX-XX-XX…” If you are still in that free look period and would like to cancel your policy, please email Detour Insurance at membercare@detourinsurance.com. Please include the primary traveler’s name and your policy (DATP) number. You will receive a policy cancellation email as well as a full refund, provided you have not started your Trip or filed a claim.
We get it – trip planning adrenaline kicks in! Please email Detour Insurance at membercare@detourinsurance.com with your policy I.D. number (DATP), traveler name(s), and correct travel dates along with your contact details. Detour will email you a revised confirmation of coverage, if there is no additional premium due. If there is additional premium due, we will let you know the additional due amount so you can confirm your revised dates and give approval to invoice you for the additional premium, prior to sending you the revised confirmation.
A longer trip? FUN! Simply email Detour Insurance at membercare@detourinsurance.com with your policy I.D. number (DATP), primary traveler name, and revised travel dates along with your contact details. Detour will email you a revised confirmation of coverage, if there is no additional premium due. If there is additional premium due, we will let you know the additional due amount so you can confirm your revised dates and give approval to invoice you for the additional premium, prior to sending you the revised confirmation.

To initiate a claim:
- Please visit https://cbpconnect.com/ to begin the process with Detour’s plan administrator, Co-Ordinated Benefit Plans.
- Click “Report a Claim” in the top navigation bar. (Registering a participant is not required.)
- Enter policy number, first name, and last name.
- Answer the presented questions so that you can be directed to the proper form.
- Upload required documentation.
